Job Description

Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) is one of the most important operational posts in Indian Railways. ALPs work in the locomotive cab alongside the Loco Pilot and are responsible for the safe and efficient running of trains. After gaining experience, ALPs are promoted to Loco Pilot and further to Senior Loco Pilot positions.

Key Responsibilities of Assistant Loco Pilot

• Locomotive Operation: Assisting the Loco Pilot in operating diesel and electric locomotives – ensuring smooth acceleration, braking, and speed control
• Signal Monitoring: Constantly observing railway signals, track conditions, and level crossings – reporting any irregularities immediately
• Safety Compliance: Following all safety protocols including speed restrictions, whistle codes, and emergency procedures
• Locomotive Inspection: Pre-departure inspection of locomotive systems including brakes, horn, lights, sanders, and safety equipment
• Emergency Response: Taking immediate corrective action during emergencies like brake failure, signal failure, or track obstruction
• Maintenance Reporting: Reporting locomotive defects and coordinating with running shed staff for repairs

Eligibility Criteria

1. Educational Qualification: Matriculation/SSLC plus ITI (Course completed) from recognized institutions of NCVT/SCVT in the relevant trade OR Diploma in Engineering in relevant disciplines (Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics/Automobile).
2. Age Limit: 18 to 33 years as on 09 February 2026. Candidates must have been born not earlier than 10 February 1993 and not later than 09 February 2008.
3. Nationality: Must be a citizen of India. Subjects of Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibetan refugees who came to India before 01 January 1962 are also eligible.
4. Medical Standards: Must meet the A-1 medical standard – strictest category requiring excellent binocular vision, color vision, and hearing ability.
5. ITI/Diploma Trades Accepted: Fitter, Turner, Machinist, Welder, Mechanic Diesel, Electrician, Electronics Mechanic, Instrument Mechanic, Wireman, Refrigeration & AC Mechanic, etc.

Salary Details

RRB ALP comes under the 7th Central Pay Commission with an attractive salary package including Running Allowance which significantly boosts total earnings. ALPs receive additional allowances specific to running staff that make this one of the best-paying Group C posts in Indian Railways.

• Basic Pay: ₹19,900 at starting level as per 7th CPC Pay Matrix Level 2 – increases with annual increments

Selection Process

RRB ALP 2026 selection process consists of multiple stages. Candidates must qualify in each stage to progress:

1. CBT Stage 1 (Preliminary): 75 questions, 75 marks, 60 minutes. 1/3rd negative marking. Qualifying only – marks NOT counted for final merit. Shortlists candidates for CBT Stage 2.
2. CBT Stage 2 (Mains): Part A (100 questions, 90 min) and Part B (75 questions, 60 min). Part A has negative marking (1/3rd). Part B is qualifying (35% minimum). Part A marks + CBAT score determine final merit.
3. Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT): Six test batteries. Minimum 42 marks in each battery required. No category relaxation. Qualifying in nature.
4. Document Verification (DV): Shortlisted candidates must appear with all original documents. Any discrepancy leads to disqualification.
5. Medical Examination: Strict A-1 medical standard. Includes vision test (6/6 with or without glasses), color vision test, hearing test, and general physical examination. Color blindness is absolute disqualification.
6. Final Merit List: Prepared based on CBT 2 Part A marks (70% weightage) + CBAT score (30% weightage). Separate zone-wise merit lists. Older candidate gets preference in case of tie.
