Job Description

Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) is one of the most important operational posts in Indian Railways. ALPs work in the locomotive cab alongside the Loco Pilot and are responsible for the safe and efficient running of trains. After gaining experience, ALPs are promoted to Loco Pilot and further to Senior Loco Pilot positions.

Key Responsibilities of Assistant Loco Pilot

  • Locomotive Operation: Assisting the Loco Pilot in operating diesel and electric locomotives โ€“ ensuring smooth acceleration, braking, and speed control
  • Signal Monitoring: Constantly observing railway signals, track conditions, and level crossings โ€“ reporting any irregularities immediately
  • Safety Compliance: Following all safety protocols including speed restrictions, whistle codes, and emergency procedures

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Educational Qualification: Matriculation/SSLC plus ITI (Course completed) from recognized institutions of NCVT/SCVT in the relevant trade OR Diploma in Engineering in relevant disciplines (Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics/Automobile).
  2. Age Limit: 18 to 33 years as on 09 February 2026. Candidates must have been born not earlier than 10 February 1993 and not later than 09 February 2008.
  3. Nationality: Must be a citizen of India. Subjects of Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibetan refugees who came to India before 01 January 1962 are also eligible.
  4. Medical Standards: Must meet the A-1 medical standard โ€“ strictest category requiring excellent binocular vision, color vision, and hearing ability.
